VITAMIN—B1

Vitamin-B1 also called Thiamine is an essential vitamin. Humans gets thiamine from their diet in order to stay healthy. Low thiamine levels in the body is associated with adverse events. Thiamine is absorbed in the intestine by a transporter protein made by the SLC19A3 gene. This gene gives instructions to produce thiamine transporter protein, which moves thiamine into cells. Drugs, like metformin and trimethoprim, have been shown to interrupt function of the SLC19A3 gene. Vitamin B1 acts as a as enzyme cofactors or the precursors to Cofactors.

A wide range of biochemical functions involves Vitamin B1. It is a micronutrient needed by organisms in small quantities for healthy metabolism. Essential nutrients are not synthesized at all or not in sufficient quantities, so must be supplemented through diet.

In the treatment of an emergency cardiac condition like 'Wet' with myocardial failure, the Intravenous route gives it slowly. While making up for Thiamine Deficiency, the recommended Adult Dose, If dextrose administered is 100 mg in each of the first few liters of Intravenous fluid to avoid precipitating heart failure, and dose of 50 to 100 mg is enough twice a day is the dose when take as supplement. The initial dose when treating Wernicke's Encephalopathy is 100 mg, given Intravenoiusly followed by 50 to 100 mg per day IM or IV until the patient is on a regular, balanced, diet. The Usual Pediatric Dose for treating Beriberi is 10 to 25 mg IM or IV daily if critically ill, or 10 to 50 mg, taken orally. everyday, for a period of 2 weeks, then the dose is reduced to 5 to 10 mg, to be taken orally, daily for 1 month.
