What is a Naloxone drug?

Naloxone is a lipophilic compound used to block the effects of opioids (substances that act on opioid receptors to produce morphine-like effects), particularly within the setting of drug overdoses, which are rapidly becoming a leading cause of death worldwide. Naloxone is used for pain relief, including anesthesia.
Naloxone was patented in 1961 by Mozes J. Lewenstein, Jack Fishman, and the company Sankyo and approved for opioid overdose in the United States by the FDA in 1971. From the 90s until 2014, Naloxone kits for opioid abuse had been distributed to medically untrained people by many states, and the CDC estimates over 26,000 cases of opioid overdose have been reversed using the kits. Naloxone is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.

How does Naloxone work?

To treat opioid overdose, an adult patient should take the initial dose of 0.4 mg to 2 mg IV. If there is not the desired response, the doses should be repeated at 2 to 3-minutes intervals. If the treatment is with a nasal spray, the patient should administer one spray intranasally into one nostril. For opioid sedation, an adult should take the initial dose of 0.1 mg to 0.2 mg IV at 2 to 3-minutes intervals to the desired degree of reversal.
If opioids are not present, Naloxone has little to no effect. If opioids are present, the side effects might be sweating, nausea, restlessness, trembling, vomiting, flushing, and headache, and has in rare cases, been associated with heart rhythm changes, seizures, and pulmonary edema.
