Human Chorionic Gonadotropin

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone that is naturally produced in women's blood and urine during pregnancy. It can be detected in the blood shortly after implantation of the embryo in the uterus, around three weeks into a four-week menstrual cycle. hCG hormone is for the maternal recognition of pregnancy. This is done by trophoblast cells surrounding a growing embryo, syncytiotrophoblast initially. This eventually forms the placenta after implantation. It can also be detected in hCG strip pregnancy tests. hCG is prescribed for multiple uses, most of them relating to fertility treatments. Some cancerous tumors produce this hormone, making pregnant test positive in cancer diagnosis and, if high enough, paraneoplastic syndromes. The pituitary analog of hCG, luteinizing hormone (LH), is produced in males', and female bodies of all ages by the pituitary gland. Human Chorionic Gonadotropin is sold under the brand names Chores, Novarel, Ovidrel among others. German scientists Selmar Aschheim and Bernhard Zondek first demonstrated hCG stimulating ovary development. They also showed its effects on the formation of the corpus luteum in humans. Organon International was awarded the first patent on a home pregnancy test in 1969 and became available in Canada in 1971, and the United States in 1977.

Dosage and administration

The recommended usual dose for Ovulation Induction in adults is 5000 to 10,000 units, given Intramuscularly, once a day after the last dose of Menotropins. If taking Recombinant –HCG, the the dose of 250 mcg is administered subcutaneously, once a day after the last dose of the follicle- stimulating agent. The Usual Adult Dose for Hypogonadism in me is 500 to 1000 units, given Intramuscularly, 3 times a week for 3 weeks, following by a dose of 500 to 1000 units, 2 times a week for 3 weeks OR 4000 units, 3 times a week for 6 to 9 months, then 2000 units IM 3 times a week for 3 months. The recommended pediatric Dose for Pre-pubertal Cryptorchidism in kids older than 4 years and older is 4000 units, though IM, given 3 times a week for 3 weeks OR 5000 units, through IM every other day for 4 injections OR 500 to 1000 units, given IM for 15 injections, administered over 6 weeks.

The price of hCG

In the USA, the consumer has to pay an average retail price of $650.47 for 1 vial containing 10ml of 10000 units in the vial. In India, the cost of one pill is between USD 20 and USD 35, not including the cost of a doctor’s visit, tests, or follow-up procedures.

How does hCG work?

Human chorionic gonadotropin aids in the normal development of an egg in a woman's ovary. It also stimulates the release of the egg during ovulation. Thus it used to cause ovulation and to treat infertility in women, and increase the sperm count in men. Gonadotropins are similar to human pituitary FSH. When Injected, they stimulate ovarian follicle growth leading to the creation of multiple eggs and thus has become the primary way to enhance fertility.
