Cefaclor

Cefaclor is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections such as pneumonia and infections of the ear, throat, lung, skin, and urinary tract. Cefaclor is from a family of antibiotics called cephalosporins. They are broad-spectrum antibiotics used for the treatment of Septicaemia, meningitis, biliary tract infections pneumonia, peritonitis, and urinary tract infections. The makeup of the cephalosporins is similar to that of the Penicillins, excretion being principally renal. Cephalosporins’ ability to penetrate the cerebrospinal fluid is poor unless the meninges are already inflamed. Cefaclor is active against several bacteria, including both Gram-negative and Gram-positive organisms, in particular, targeted towards Haemophilus influenza, Staphylcoccus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes. Cefaclor is marketed under the brand Ceclor among others. Eli Lily Italy is the main manufacturer & patent owner of Cefaclor. Cefaclor got patented in 1973 and approved for medical use in 1979.

Forms and Dosage

Cefaclor is sold as capsules and as extended-release tablets. In the treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections, including pneumonia, caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Streptococcus pyogenes, the standard prescribed dose in Capsules is 250-500 mg every 8 hours. In the treatment of Otitis Media, Capsules of 250-500 mg are prescribed to be administered every 8 hours. In the treatment of Uncomplicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections, the recommended dosage is 250-500 mg every 8 hours or an Extended-release tablet of 375 mg taken every 12 for 7-10 days. In the treatment of Urinary Tract Infections and Bronchitis the dosage of extended-release tablets of 250 mg every 8 hours and in the treatment of Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis, the patients are prescribed Capsules of 250-500 mg, to be taken every 8 hours or Extended-release tablets of 750 mg given every 12 hours for 10 days.

The cost of Cefaclor

In the USA, the consumers have to pay an average retail price of $115 usd for a supply of 30 capsules of 500 mg strength. In the United Kingdom, the same supply of 30 tables would cost 122 Euros.

How does it work?

Cefaclor actions exert bactericidal activity by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis and inhibiting the cross-linking of the peptidoglycan. The cephalosporins play a role in the activation of bacterial cell autolysins which may contribute to bacterial cell lysis. Cefaclor's actions work by stopping the growth of bacteria. Cefaclor is used in only the treatment of bacterial infections.
