SISOMICIN SULFATE
Sisomicin Sulfate is the sulfate salt form of Sisomicin. It is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used in
the treatment of bacterial infections, bacterial skin infections, treating infected or cut wounds. It
is a newer broad-spectrum aminoglycoside related to gentamicin and isolated from the
fermentation broth of a new species of the genus Micromonospora. Sisomicin is the highly
active aminoglycoside against Gram-positive bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Sisomicin is
effective in treating infections that were not cured by the first-line therapy or were due to
microorganisms’ resistance in vitro to other aminoglycosides in some recent studies. Its actions
stop the growth of bacteria, thus resolve the symptoms.
Sisomicin Sulfate is sold under the brand names Sisorest, sis next, Pitocin, Isoptin,
gentamycin, sisowill amongst others.
Schering Corp filed the first patent for Sisomicin Sulfate with USFDA in 1971 for methods for
production. Chino in Gyogyszer es Vegyeszeti Termekek Gyara Zrt is the current assignee of the
newest patent issued in 1983.
Dosage and administration
Sisomicin Sulfate is sold as cream (0.01%) and injection of 10mg/ml ad eye drops. It is
administered as Ophthalmic drops, Intramuscular injection, and topically cream. For Susceptible
infections, the usual adult dose is 3 mg per kilo of body weight per day, injected Intramuscularly
in 2-3 divided doses. When using the Ophthalmic drops, the patient has to instill one or two
drops into the affected eyes. When using Topically, its 0.1% cream is applied twice daily.
The Price of Sisomicin Sulfate
In the global ingredient market, the price of 500mg of Sisomicin Sulfate costs around USD245.
In India, the cream costs USD1.2 for a supply of 1mg.
How does it work?
Sisomicin is an antibiotic. Its actions prevent essential protein synthesis required by bacteria to
carry out vital functions. This preventive action treats skin infections. It exerts its bactericidal
action against gram-negative organisms & some gram-positive organisms through inhibition of
bacterial protein synthesis. First, it penetrates the bacterial cell membrane & binds directly to the
bacterial ribosome, where it misleads mRNA codon by the bacterial ribosome. This creates
peptide chains with the wrong amino acid sequence which gets incorporated into the bacterial
cell membrane. This eventually alters its permeability leading to Bacterial cell lysis.
