Niacin

Niacin is both a vitamin and a medicine. It is a nicotinic acid, an organic compound and an essential human nutrient. Niacin is a major component of two coenzymes that are responsible for cellular metabolism. Vitamin B also plays a critical role in cell signaling and making and repairing DNA. It also has the properties of an antioxidant. Body gets its dose of Niacin from a variety of foods, more so in fortified packaged foods, meat, poultry and red fish and in lesser concentrations in nuts and seeds. As a dietary supplement, is used to treat pellagra, whose symptoms include skin & mouth lesions, anemia & headaches, and lethargy. As the diets vary across the world, many governments mandate its addition to wheat flour or other food grains. It is also used as a medicine to treat high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. When Niacin gets stored in body in excess of the recommended intake, helps in lowering the blood triglycerides and low density lipoprotein cholesterol, and increases the blood high density lipoprotein cholesterol , also known as the good cholesterol. For treating Niacin deficiency, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends administering niacinamide instead of niacin, to avoid the side effects of niacin and because deficiencies of other B-vitamins may also be effecting the patient, the WHO also recommends taking multi-vitamins in addition to the Niacinamide. Dementia and dermatitis show improvement within a week. It was so important that Niacin prescriptions in the U.S. had reached 9.4 million, declining to 1.3 million by 2017. Hugo Weidel first described niacin, as a chemical, in 1873 in his studies of nicotine.

Dosage

Niacin is sold in two forms, one as immediate-release and the other as sustained-release niacin. Patients are started on a initial dose of 500 mg/day, increased during the therapy, until a desired effect is achieved. The standard immediate-release doses are as high as 3,000 mg/day and sustained-release dosage is as high as 2,000 mg/day. The prescription for Children between 2-16 milligrams daily. Depending on age, Men are recommneded 16 milligrams daily where as women, 14mg per day but Pregnant women need 18 milligrams daily and Breastfeeding mothers needs 17 milligrams daily, the maximum daily intake is capped at 35 mg per day.

Wholesale Cost of Niacin

A month supply of Niacin can cost upwards of USD12 for 90 tablets in the USA, depending on the pharmacy and brand. The same supply in the UK costs around 8.20 pounds.

How does it work?

Niacin is a B vitamin that's made and used by our body which turns food into energy. It job is to keep the nervous, digestive system and skin healthy. Niacin reduces synthesis of low- density lipoprotein cholesterols and triglycerides, and increases high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. The mechanism behind Niacin increasing HDL-C is not clearly understood yet, but seems to occur anyways and in many ways.
