HYPROMELLOSE

Hypromellose is popularly called artificial tears. It prevents corneal damage in patients with kerato- conjunctivitis sicca accompanying rheumatoid arthritis, xerophthalmias, or keratitis. It moistens hard contact lenses and lubricates artificial eyes during Gonioscopy procedures. Hypromellose actions provide relief of dry eye conditions immediate. These include dry eye conditions associated with the use of TVs, infrequent blinking, some therapies, pollution, and a dry atmosphere. It is used as eye drops and a component of controlled-delivery in oral medicaments. It is used in HPMC matrices and oral controlled delivery systems. It is also used in a wide range of commercial products. As a food additive, Hypromellose is used as a thickening, suspending agent emulsifier, and an animal gelatin alternative. Hypromellose has other uses such as acting as a thickening agent, binder, hydrophilic matrix material, and film former. Hypromellose is sold under the brand names Hymelose, Hyprosol, Ikleen amongst others. Yea-Sheng Yang filed for the first patent in relation to Hypromellose in 2002. Noack Robert M. later filed a patent for Oral extended-release tablets and methods of making and using the same in 2002. Since it is essential to mix ingredients, Hypromellose is involved in several formulations and patents by several companies around the world.

Dosage and administration

Hypromellose is sold as oral & ophthalmic solution in 18 mg/1mL and 25 mg/1mL strengths. The dose for adults, children, and the elderly is one or two drops topically instilled into the eye, three times a day or directed by the doctors.

The price of Hypromellose

In the USA, consumers have to pay an average retail price of USD 24.30 for a supply of 15 milliliters. The price of 0.3%/ml eye drops cost USD 0.35 for a supply of 10ml.

How does it work?

Hypromellose increases corneal wetting by the stabilization and thickening of the precorneal tear film. Its actions also prolong the tear film breakdown time, which is very short in people with dry eye conditions. Its ingredients also lubricate and protect the eye. Hypromellose’s surface-active properties stabilize the tear film and increase tear viscosity, resulting in prevention and delay in tear evaporation and delay tear drainage. In patients with dry eyes caused by mucin deficiency, its surface activity and its adsorptive capacity make hypromellose ideal for use. Hypromellose actions create an aqueous solution, a reduced surface tension, and an increased level of viscosity. Hypromellose provides ample moisture to the cornea and conjunctiva.
