What is Ertapenem?
Ertapenem falls under the drug class of Carbapenem antibiotics. It is bactericidal, meaning its function is to kill the foreign agent, mainly bacteria. It does so by preventing the cross-linking of an important agent in the bacteria's cell wall called peptidoglycan.
It can effectively treat a number of serious infections such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections, skin infections, diabetic foot, gynecological, pelvic, and abdominal infections. It is also administered after colorectal surgery to prevent infections. It should be kept in mind that Ertapenem will not work against minor ailments such as colds and flus. If they are taken in such diseases, drug resistance may ensue.
The other constituents of Ertapenem, in addition to the active ingredient, are sodium bicarbonate and sodium hydroxide.
General drug sources for Ertapenem

Ertapenem is available parenterally only, in the form of Intramuscular (IM) or Intravenous (IV) injections. It is provided as a powder that needs to be mixed with liquid before administration. Each vial contains 1 gram, which is the dosage that should be administered in both adults and children.
How should Ertapenem be used?
Depending on the disease, the dose of Ertapenem may vary. The doses administered in certain diseases are:
1 g/day IV or IM up to 14 days
Complicated Urinary Tract Infections (Including Pyelonephritis)

Acute Pelvic Infections
1 g/day IV or IM for 3-10 days
1 g/day IV or IM for 5-14 days
Complicated Skin Infections
1 g/day IV or IM for 7-14 days
It should be noted that if Ertapenem is being administered IV, the maximum days it should proceed is 14, whereas for IM the maximum number of days is 7.
Once the infection has subsided, your doctor may switch you to oral antibiotics.
Use the injection exactly as directed by your healthcare physician. Do not increase or decrease the dose. Administer the injection at the same time every day. If your condition worsens or an adverse reaction is encountered, contact your doctor immediately. Your symptoms will likely improve after the first few doses, but it is strongly advised to not discontinue the treatment regimen, as this may cause antibiotic resistance
