CHLORTALIDONE

Chlorthalidone is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), with healthy blood pressure helping prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. This extra salt build-up in these patients is reduced using Chlorthalidone. Extra salt and water in the body leading to edema (swelling) and build up extra fluid can cause breathing problems. As a "water pill" or diuretic, its action increases the amount of urine the body makes, thus helping to discharge the extra fluid and salt build up. In addition, it also helps to relax the blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily. It belongs to a group of medicines called thiazide-related diuretics. Chlorthalidone may also help patients of diabetes insipidus, a condition which makes the patients produce large amounts of dilute urine, which also makes them constantly thirsty. Chlorthalidone is sold under the brand names Hygroton, Thalitone amongst others Geigy Chem Corp filed the first Chlortalidone patent in 1957 and came into medical use in 1960. However, since the expiry of the initial patents, several other companies have filed newer patents for newer formulations and it also available as a generic drug.

Forms and dosage:

Chlorthalidone is available as tablets in increasing strengths from 15mg to 100mg. As an adjunctive therapy, it is used to treat edema associated with heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis, nephrotic syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis, chronic renal failure, and corticosteroid and in estrogen therapy. The initial usual adult dose starts at 50 to 100 mg, once a day or 100 mg, every other day. In the treatment of hypertension, the dosage for adults initially is 25 mg, once a day.

How does Chlorthalidone work?

Chlortalidone actions interfere with the movement of salt and water across certain cells in kidneys. These actions, eventually result in making kidneys pass more urine. As the extra salt and fluids are flushed out of the system, the patient can feel relief from the symptoms of blood pressure and helps reduce the stress on the heart.
