How does Vitamin B6 work?

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) is needed for the proper function of sugars, fats, and proteins in the body. It is also required for the proper growth and development of the brain, nerves, skin, and many other parts of the body. The 4-methanol form, pyridoxine gets converted into pyridoxal 5-phosphate, which is an important coenzyme for synthesis of amino acids, neurotransmitters, sphingolipids, and aminolevulinic acid. Vitamin B6, in its biologically active coenzyme form, is involved in a wide range of biochemical reactions, including the metabolism of amino acids and glycogen, synthesis of nucleic acids, hemogloblin, sphingomyelin, and sphingolipids. It is also responsible for the synthesis of the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid.
