Ampicillin

Ampicillin is an antibiotic that can be used to treat many bacterial infections such as meningitis and salmonellosis. It can also be used to prevent group A streptococcal infections in newborns. It was the principal "expansive range" penicillin with action against Gram-positive microorganisms, including Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, some disengages of Staphylococcus aureus (yet not penicillin-safe or methicillin-safe strains), Trueperella, and some Enterococcus. It can also be used to combat multiple drug-resistant Enterococcus foecalis and E. faecium.

How does Ampicillin work?

It acts by inhibiting the bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding one or more penicillin binding proteins. It also has a bacterial-autolytic effect through inhibition of certain penicillin binding proteins (PBPs) that are involved in activating a bacterial self-destructive process. Ampicillin, like other antibiotics, will not be effective against colds, flus, or other viral infections. You run the risk of developing an infection that resists antibiotic treatment if you take antibiotics when you don't need them. Co-administration with sulbactam increases its activity spectrum. This drug inhibits beta lactamase which is an enzyme that bacteria produces to inactivate antibiotics. Sometimes, it is used with other antibiotics, such as vancomycin and linezolid. Hypersensitivity to penicillins can make it unsafe to use ampicillin. Hypersensitivity reactions may include skin rashes, erythema multiforme and temporary decreases in red and white blood cell count. It is a common drug used in pregnancy. It has been classified as a category B by the Food and Drug Administration (U.S.) and A by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (Australia). It is the preferred drug for Listeria monocytogenes treatment in pregnant women. It can be used alone or with an aminoglycoside. It was first discovered in 1958. It became commercially available in 1961. It is listed on the Essential Medicines list. It is a critical medicine for humans according to the World Health Organization. It can be purchased as a generic drug.
