Silodosin

Silodosin, an alpha-blocker, is used to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia in men. This includes difficulty in urinating like hesitation, dribbling, weak stream, and incomplete bladder emptying, painful urination, and urinary frequency and urgency. Silodosin can only relieve the symptoms but does not cure them. Silodosin is sold under the brand names Rapaflo, Urorec, Silotrif, and Silorel among others. Kissei Pharmaceutical and Daiichi Sankyo received their first marketing approval in 2006 for sale in Japan, under the brand name Urief. Later on, Kissei licensed the US, Canadian, and Mexican rights to Watson Pharmaceuticals in 2004. It was approved by USFDA and Health Canada approved under the brand name Rapaflo in 2008 and 2011 respectively.

Dosage and administration

Silodosin comes as a capsule. It is taken orally with food once a day and should not take on an empty stomach. It should be taken around the same time every day and the users have to continue even if they find relief from symptoms. The therapy should be stopped only in consultation with the doctor. The recommended adult dose is 8 mg, taken orally, once a day with meals. those with difficulty in swallowing pills and capsules are to open the RAPAFLO capsule and sprinkle the powder inside on a tablespoonful of applesauce and swallowed immediately or within 5 minutes without chewing. This should be followed by an 8 ounces’ glass of cool water to ensure complete swallowing. The applesauce should be cool (not hot) and easy to swallow. Any mixture should be used immediately and not stored for future use.

How does it work?

Silodosin displays potent effects on α1A adrenergic receptors in the prostate, the bladder, and the prostatic urethra. It exerts in action by relaxing the muscles of the bladder and prostate. It can only control the symptoms of BPH but cannot cure it. It also cannot shrink the prostate.
