ROXITHROMYCIN

Roxithromycin is a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic. It treats respiratory tract, urinary and soft tissue infections. More specifically, it is used to treat infections caused by bacteria in different parts of the body like acute pharyngitis also called sore throat and discomfort when swallowing, tonsillitis, sinusitis, acute bronchitis. In the treatment of pneumonia, a type of lung infection characterized by fever, malaise, headache, skin and soft tissue infections, non- gonococcal urethritis, and impetigo, a bacterial infection that causes sores on the skin. This medicine works by killing or stopping the growth of the bacteria causing the infection. Roxithromycin is sold under the brand name Roxid among others. Roussel Uclaf filed for the first patent in the 1980s. it was later approved for medical use in 1987. Roxithromycin is not available in the United States. However, it is sold in Australia, France, Germany, Israel and New Zealand.

Forms and Dosage:

Roxithromycin is sold as Tablets, film-coated and for a solution. For common Susceptible infections, 150 milligrams twice a day or 300 milligrams once daily is effective. The patients are advised to continue taking the medication at least 2 days after resolution of symptoms. The course lasts for at least 10 days in streptococcal infections, urethritis, cervicitis, and cervicovaginitis. This medicine should not be taken for more than four weeks. For treating Isopsoriasis, the recommended adult dose is 2.5mg/kg every 12 hours for 2 weeks and for treating Lyme disease, the dose is 300 milligrams in combination with other medications twice a day for 2 weeks.

The price of Roxithromycin:

In the USA, the consumer can buy Roxithromycin 300 mg each for $1.46. and this price o this medicine in India for a price of each tablet is US$0.10.

How it works:

Roxithromycin antibacterial actions take effect by binding to the bacterial ribosome where it interferes with the bacterial protein synthesis. Highly concentrated in polymorphonuclear leukocytes and macrophages, it helps in achieving intracellular concentrations greater than those outside the cell. Roxithromycin improves the chemotactic and adhesive properties of these cells, this is important because, in case of infection, it produces phagocytosis and bacterial lysis. It also has intracellular bactericidal actions. Roxithromycin works by preventing bacterial growth by interfering with their protein synthesis.
