Etofenamate

Etofenamate is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Etofenamate is used to treat joint and muscular pains. For the external supportive symptomatic treatment of pain in adults caused by acute strains, sprains or bruises in the extremities after blunt trauma such as sports injuries, in soft tissue near a joint for example bursa, tendon, cord and joint capsules in cases of gonarthrosis. Etofenamate is sold under the brand names Rheumon, Doline and Roiplon amongst other names. Bayer Ag filed the first patent for their anti-fungal composition in emulsion form with a higher release rate of Etofenamate in 1981. Patents filed by Sumitomo, Proctor, and gamble for various topical formulations followed this.

Dose and Forms

Etofenamate is available for topical application as a cream, a gel or as a spray and an injection. Depending on the nature of the injury or pain caused by it, the patient is recommended to apply the gel using a 5 to 10 cm long ribbon with gel equivalent to about 1.7 to 3.3 g and 75 to 150 mg of Etofenamate. The thin layers is applied few times a day depending on the relief from the symptoms. However, even when treating for blunt trauma, the maximum daily dose is capped at 9 grams of gel, equivalent to 450 mg of Etofenamate. Etofenamate gel is only for external application to the skin. The gel should be left to dry and the application of an occlusive dressing is not recommended. It ususally provided relief within a week, however, generally, the patients are advised to visit a doctor if there is no relief after 3 days of use. When it is administered in the injection form, the normal dose is 1 g injected deeply in single doses.

The cost of Etofenamate

In Europe, Topical Gel of 100G is sold for price start 14 Euros. The average export price for 1 kilo of the ingredient version of this drug cost USD100. In the USA, consumers have to pay USD104 for the same supply of 100grams of this gel.

How does it work?

Anti-inflammatory agents like Etofenamate have non-steroidal actions. In addition to treating inflammatory conditions it also has analgesic, antipyretic, and platelet-inhibitory properties. Etofenamate’s actions block the synthesis of prostaglandins by inhibiting cyclooxygenase. This synthesis converts arachidonic acid to cyclic endoperoxides, precursors of prostaglandins. Etofenamate’s analgesic, antipyretic, and platelet-inhibitory actions account for Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
