Cefpodoxime Proxetil

Cefpodoxime proxetil is an antibiotic that is effectively used to treat various bacterial infections such as Pneumonia, Sinusitis, tonsillitis, middle ear infections (otitis media), throat (pharyngitis) infections, urinary tract infections (UTIs), bronchitis, gonorrhea, as well as acute and chronic bronchitis bacterial in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Skin structure or skin infections caused by susceptible bacteria and many other infections. This antibiotic works by destroying the cell walls of bacteria. Cefpodoxime proxetil is sold under the brand names Vantin and Banan amongst others. Pharmacia and Upjohn filed for the first patents and got the FDA approval for cefpodoxime proxetil in 1992.

Forms and Dosage

Cefpodoxime proxetil is available as tablets in 100 mg and 200 mg and granules for oral suspension in 50 and 100 mg/5 ml. In the treatment of pneumonia, bronchitis, or sinusitis, the adult dose is 200 mg every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days. While treating Gonorrhea, the recommended dose is 200 mg and for treating Urinary tract infections, the usual adult dose is 100 mg, taken every 12 hours for 7 to 14 days and for treating skin or skin structure infections, the usual adult dose is 00 mg, taken every 12 hours for 1 – 2 weeks.
The recommended dose for infants and children of 12 years is 5mg per kilogram of body weight, given orally, every 12 hours for 10 days with maximum dose capped at 200 mg and for treating Children for above 12 years, the usual pediatric dose is 200 mg, taken orally, every 12 hours for 10 days.
