Milnacipran is available under the brand names Ixel,Savella. Dalcipran and Toledomin among many others. it is classified under selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors(SNRIs). This pharmaceutical medication is available in the strengths of 100mg, 12.5mg, 25mg, and 50mg among many varying strengths, and can be administered through the oral route in the form of tablets or capsules. Its legal status is ‘’Prescription Only Medication’’. It is 85% bioavailable and has 13% protein binding with an elimination half-life of 8 hours. It is metabolized in the liver and is excreted through urine. It is indicated for the treatment of chronic pain caused by fibromyalgia, major depressive disorder, and other psychiatric disorders. Associated side effects include little or no urination, blurred vision, eye pain, seizures, liver problem, low sodium level, and manic episodes. Its excretion into human breastmilk is very low and is not harmful to infants if used, until more data is available it can be used by lactating mothers but with caution. During pregnancy it should be only used when prescribed as its use during the last trimester may cause withdrawal symptoms in infants.
This pharmaceutical medication has drug interactions with water pills such as Furosemide, blood thinners such as Warfarin, Heparin, and antiplatelet drugs such as Clopidogrel. It is contraindicated in patients with alcoholism, increased risk of bleeding, and hyponatremia. FDA approved it on January 14, 2009.
