Mesna

Mesna reduces the risk of hemorrhagic cystitis, a condition in which bladder inflammation results in serious bleeding in people who receive ifosfamide, a form of chemotherapy. The human body breaks down ifosfamide to form which harms the bladder. Mesna is a class of medication called cytoprotectants which protect the bladder against the harmful effects of some chemotherapy medications. However, it does not change the efficacy of ifosfamide. Mesna is also administered through alternative IVP regimens, intermittent infusion, or continuous infusions. In the prevention of Cyclophosphamide Induced Hemorrhagic Cystitis, the dose is 20% of cyclophosphamide dose is injected, 4 and 8 hours after each dose of chemotherapy.
