Loxoprofen sodium

Loxoprofen sodium belongs to the propionic acid derivatives group. It is a nonsteroidal anti- inflammatory drug much like ibuprofen and naproxen. Loxoprofen sodium reduces inflammation and pain in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, lumbar pain, frozen shoulder, neck-shoulder-arm syndrome, tooth pain, as well as after surgery, wounds, or tooth removal. Loxoprofen sodium is marketed in Brazil, Mexico, and Japan Loxonin, in Argentina as Oxeno and in India as Loxomac among others. It is also sold as a drug for oral use in some countries. Sankyo received approval for a transdermal preparation for sale in Japan in 2006, followed by tape and gel formulations in 2008 and 2010 respectively. Sankyo Company Limited patented it in 1977 and approved it for medical use in the USA in1986.

Loxoprofen sodium is an NSAID b ut a prodrug. It has similar actions to other NSAIDs. COX-1 is constitutively released and is involved in cellular housekeeping functions like mucus production and platelet aggregation. By inhibiting COX isoforms, it reduces the expression of several mediators of pain, inflammation, and fever.
