origins, except pruritus caused by cholestasis and insect bites. Dimethindene is also

Dimetindene is an antihistamine or anticholinergic, which is a first-generation selective H1

antagonist. Dimetindene is sold in its most common forms, maleic acid salt and
Dimethindene maleate.
Dimethindene is sold under the brand name Fenistil among others.
Merck & Co Inc first patented Dimetindene in, 1958 for its Mastitis aerosol foam. It came in
to medical use in 1960. Later several other formulations were developed around the world, in

How does Dimethindene Work?
Dimethindene is a potent M2-selective muscarinic receptor antagonist in the form of a
racemic mixture. It has a lower affinity for M1, M3, and M4 muscarinic receptors, for histamine
H1 receptor binding. Its actions block the action of endogenous histamine, giving temporary
relief from negative symptoms brought on by histamine release.
