Traditionally, chasteberry has been used for the treatment of premenstrual symptoms (acting its flavonoids on μ and opiate receptors, together with its agonist effect on D2 dopamine receptors), as an emmenagogue, galactogen, tranquilizer, and to promote sleep. Also for the treatment of symptoms associated with a deficiency of luteinizing hormone (LH), such as mastodynia and menstrual cycle irregularities, and treatment of acne. In an "in vitro" test, the immunomodulatory activity of casticin, one of the main chasteberry flavonoids, has been revealed.
