Terbutaline

Terbutaline is used to treat conditions with symptoms of wheezing and shortness of breath from lung conditions like Asthma, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Bronchitis and Emphysema. As a bronchodilator, Terbutaline is a beta-agonist. It relaxes the muscles around the airways causing them to open up making it easy to breathe. Terbutaline is sold under the brand name Bricanyl among others Aktiebolaget Braco of Sweden patented it in 1966 and it came into medical use in 1970.

Terbutaline is sold as a Tablets of 2.5mg, 5mg strength, as an injectable solution in 1mg/mL. While treating a Bronchospasm, the usual Initial dose is set at 2.5 mg three to four times a day, while the Maintenance dose is 5 mg, taken three times daily every 6 hours while the patient is awake. In the delaying Preterm Labor (Off-label), the usual initial dose is 2.5-5 mcg per min administered through an IV, this slowly increased as it is tolerated, at 20-30 minute intervals.
