What is Amoxicillin?

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic. Amoxicillin works by inhibiting penicillin-binding proteins and high molecular weight penicillin-binding protein. Amoxicillin is used to treat bacterial infections, such as ear, nose or throat infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and pneumonia (lower respiratory tract). Amoxicillin can also be used for the medical treatment of acute otitis media, streptococcal pharyngitis, Salmonella infections, Lyme disease, and chlamydia infections.
If Amoxicillin is administered in combination with another medication, it can treat other infections. Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid can be used to treat acute bacterial sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia, and lower respiratory tract infections. If Amoxicillin is given in combination with Omeprazole, it can be used for the treatment of H. pylori.
Amoxicillin was discovered in 1958 at Beecham, England. Amoxicillin was approved for medical use in 1972 in the UK. In 1974, the FDA approved the medical use of Amoxicillin; Amoxicillin is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.

How to use Amoxicillin?

To treat chlamydia infection, an adult patient should take 500 mg of Amoxicillin orally three times a day for seven days.
To treat helicobacter pylori infection, a patient can choose between a dual or triple therapy. For the dual therapy, the adult patient should take 1 g orally every 8 hours for 14 days in combination with lansoprazole and for the triple therapy, an adult patient should take 1 g orally every 12 hours for 14 days in combination with clarithromycin and lansoprazole.
To treat mild, moderate, or severe pneumonia or bronchitis, an adult patient should take 500 mg of Amoxicillin orally every 8 hours or 875 mg every 12 hours. To treat mild to moderate sinusitis, skin infection, or urinary tract infection, an adult patient should take 250 mg of Amoxicillin orally every 8 hours or 500 mg every 12 hours, and for severe infection, the patient should take 500 mg of Amoxicillin every 8 hours or 875 mg every 12 hours.
Taking Amoxicillin can cause side effects, such as nausea, diarrhea, rash, headache, heavier menstrual periods, unusual or unpleasant (after-) taste, and general body swelling.
It is recommended to take Amoxicillin with food.
